Ophelia reimagines the events of Hamlet from the perspective of its heroine. Raised as a ward of the Danish court, she becomes a trusted attendant to Queen Gertrude, and her intelligence and independent nature draw the attention of Prince Hamlet. The two begin a secret romance while the kingdom slides toward war and the palace fills with intrigue and betrayal. When Hamlet's father dies and his uncle Claudius takes the throne, Ophelia finds herself caught between her feelings for the prince and the need to protect herself as she tries to shape her own future.
Claire McCarthy directed the film, her second feature after The Turning, from a screenplay by Semi Chellas. Daisy Ridley plays Ophelia opposite George MacKay as Hamlet, with Naomi Watts as Gertrude and Mechtild, Clive Owen as Claudius, Tom Felton as Laertes and Devon Terrell as Horatio. The production, made in the United Kingdom and the United States, had a budget of about 12 million dollars and runs 114 minutes.
Audience response has been moderate. On IMDb the film holds 6.5 out of 10 from nearly fifteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 out of 10 from a much smaller number of ratings.
