Dark River
Short description
Alice Bell returns to her Yorkshire village after fifteen years away, following the death of her father. She believes the family farm is rightfully hers and intends to take possession of it, but her brother Joe has stayed behind, running the struggling farm and caring for their ill father. The two siblings find themselves in conflict over the property, and the homecoming forces Alice to confront difficult memories of the past.
Clio Barnard directed and wrote the film, which followed her 2013 drama The Selfish Giant in her filmography and came before I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning. Tracy O'Riordan produced for Film4 Productions, the BFI and Moonspun Films. Ruth Wilson plays Alice, with Mark Stanley as Joe, Sean Bean as Richard Bell, Esmé Creed-Miles as young Alice, Dean Andrews as Matty and Joe Dempsie as David. The film runs 90 minutes and blends drama, mystery and thriller elements.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 5.9 from around 4,600 votes, and on TMDB it has a rating of 5.6 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 62 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- A very loose adaptation of Rose Tremaine's 2010 novel. Initially, the screenwriter and director, Clio Barnard, wrote a script much closer to the text of the novel, but later rewrote it at the insistence of the producers.
