Short description

Pork Pie is a New Zealand action comedy about three young people who end up on the run together. Luke, a small-time thief, takes a yellow Mini and meets Jon, a writer determined to reach the far south of the country. Keira, who has just lost her job at a fast-food restaurant, joins them along the way. Each of the three has a different goal, and their minor offences soon draw the attention of the police. A chase across the country follows, with the media caught up in it as well.

Matt Murphy wrote and directed the film, which is a loose reworking of the 1981 road movie Goodbye Pork Pie. It was his first feature as director, with Tom Hern producing for Southern Light Films and Four Knights Film. Dean O'Gorman plays Jon, James Rolleston plays Luke, and Ashleigh Cummings plays Keira, heading a credited cast of 27 that also includes Antonia Prebble, Matt Whelan and Siobhan Marshall.

The film was released in February 2017 and runs 105 minutes. Made on a budget of about 4 million US dollars, it drew modest numbers at the box office. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from roughly 2,500 votes, and on TMDB a 6.6 from a much smaller user base. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 10 reviews sits close to the audience scores.
