To Walk Invisible is a British television drama about the Brontë sisters and the years in which they wrote the novels that made their names. In Haworth, Yorkshire, Charlotte, Emily and Anne live with their father Patrick, a widowed clergyman losing his sight, and their brother Branwell, whose drinking, drug use and gambling bring repeated trouble to the household. With the family's prospects worsening and no reliable income, Charlotte comes to see writing as a possible way out. Because women authors faced prejudice at the time, the sisters sought publication under male pseudonyms. Their brother's decline runs alongside their work and shapes the household in which the books were written.
Sally Wainwright wrote and directed the film for BBC Wales, with Karen Lewis producing. Finn Atkins, Chloe Pirrie and Charlie Murphy play the three sisters, while Adam Nagaitis plays Branwell, Jonathan Pryce plays Patrick Brontë and Luke Newberry appears as George Smith. The cast runs to thirty-three credited performers.
The film was broadcast on 26 December 2016 and runs 120 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from around 3,400 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.3 from 65 votes, indicating a well-received television production with a much larger audience sample on the first site. It was made for television rather than cinemas, and belongs to Wainwright's work as both writer and director.
