Padmaavat

Padmaavat is set in thirteenth-century India, where the kingdom of Mewar is ruled by Maharaja Ratan Singh and his wife, Queen Padmavati. Word of her beauty reaches Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi, a tyrannical and power-hungry ruler who becomes fixated on her and resolves to possess her. When he learns she is another man's wife, he turns his ambitions on Mewar itself, laying siege to its fort. Ratan Singh gathers his Rajput warriors to defend his land and his queen, setting up a confrontation between the sultan's overwhelming forces and a people for whom honor outweighs survival. The film draws on the epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Prakash R. Kapadia, and also produces through Bhansali Productions alongside Viacom18 Studios. The film follows Bajirao Mastani in Bhansali's filmography and precedes Gangubai Kathiawadi. Deepika Padukone plays Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor plays Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh plays Alauddin Khilji, with Jim Sarbh, Aayam Mehta and Ujjwal Chopra among the credited cast of 47.
