Gintoki Sakata is a young samurai living in a feudal Tokyo that has been invaded and occupied by aliens. With few prospects, he takes whatever work he can find, and he runs a small odd-jobs business alongside Shinpachi Shimura and Kagura. Two assignments draw the group into a larger conflict: tracking down a skilled swordsman and wanted terrorist, and locating the cursed sword known as Benizakura before it falls into the wrong hands.
The film adapts the Benizakura storyline from the manga and anime of the same name, and was made for Japanese television. Yuichi Fukuda directed and wrote the screenplay, with Shun Oguri as Gintoki, Masaki Suda as Shinpachi, Kanna Hashimoto as Kagura, Yuya Yagira as Toshiro Hijikata, Hirofumi Arai as Nizo Okada and Ryo Yoshizawa as Sougo Okita. It was Fukuda's third feature, following HK: Forbidden Super Hero and its sequel, and he later returned to the same world with Gintama 2: Rules Are Made to Be Broken.
It launched in Japanese cinemas in July 2017 with a 130-minute runtime and went on to take around 47 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a domestic live-action adaptation. Audiences are mixed on it: it holds 6.1/10 on IMDb from roughly 2,900 votes and 6.8/10 on TMDB from 148 votes, while a small sample of critics rated it 4.4/10, well below both audience scores. The production was handled by Warner Bros. Pictures with Shueisha, dentsu and Aniplex among its backers.
