Miles is a teenage motocross rider who does not fit in easily with people his own age and spends much of his time on his bike in the California desert. After a dangerous prank leaves him stranded in a remote valley, he encounters A-X-L, a robotic dog built as a military weapon. The machine runs on an advanced artificial intelligence that makes it behave much like a real animal, and the two form a bond. That friendship puts Miles at odds with the scientists and soldiers who created A-X-L and want their creation back, since the robot was designed to kill. With help from Sara, a girl he has come to care about, Miles tries to keep his new companion out of their hands.
A-X-L was released in 2018 and runs 98 minutes. It is an American production from Lakeshore Entertainment, Stage 6 Films, Phantom Four and Global Road Entertainment, made on a budget of about 10 million dollars. Oliver Daly directed and wrote the screenplay, with Tom Rosenberg, David S. Goyer and Gary Lucchesi producing. Alex Neustaedter plays Miles and Becky G plays Sara, alongside Alex MacNicoll, Dominic Rains, Thomas Jane and Lou Taylor Pucci.
Audience response has been mixed but warmer than that of reviewers. On IMDb the film holds 5.3 out of 10 from almost 13,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 1,300 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from 24 reviews places professional opinion noticeably below both audience scores.
