Cook Up a Storm centres on two cooks from opposite ends of the food world. Gao Tian Ci runs a small street food stall known for Cantonese cooking, while Paul is a chef with Michelin recognition who trained in France. When an international culinary competition puts them on opposite sides, their professional rivalry becomes the main event. The contest takes a turn, though, once the two men realise they share an adversary and begin pooling their very different kitchens into a meeting of Eastern and Western cooking.
The film is a Hong Kong and mainland Chinese comedy drama directed by Raymond Yip Wai-Man, arriving in 2017 between The House That Never Dies and Iceman: The Time Traveler in the list of films he has directed. Manfred Wong Man-Chun wrote the screenplay with Liu Yi and Li Jing Ling, and also produced alongside Mani Fok Man-Hei. Nicholas Tse plays Gao Tian Ci, with Jung Yong-hwa as Paul, Tang Yan as Hai Dan Mei, Bai Bing as Mayo, Ge You as Hong Qi and Anthony Wong as Antony Go among a credited cast of twenty-five.
It was released in February 2017 and took about 18 million US dollars worldwide. Audiences have been warmer than the modest gross might suggest: on IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5 out of 10 from roughly 200 votes.
