Craig is sixteen years old and struggling with depression so severe that he checks himself into a psychiatric hospital. Because the youth ward is closed, he is placed on the adult unit, where he feels out of place among patients whose problems are far more serious than his own. There he meets Bobby, an older patient who becomes something like a mentor and protector, and Noelle, a girl close to his age. During a stay of just a few days, Craig confronts questions about adulthood, friendship and the direction of his life.
The 2010 film was directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who also wrote the screenplay. It sits third in the directing filmography shared by the pair, after Half Nelson and Sugar and before Mississippi Grind, Captain Marvel and Freaky Tales. Keir Gilchrist plays Craig, with Emma Roberts as Noelle and Zach Galifianakis as Bobby; Viola Davis, Lauren Graham and Jim Gaffigan appear in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 8 million USD and took about 6 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 7.1/10 from roughly 152,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from about 2,500 votes. A critics' rating of 6/10 from 137 reviews places professional assessments slightly below the audience scores.
