Bobby Walker appears to have everything: a well-paid corporate job, a family, a comfortable home, and a Porsche in the garage. That life unravels when the shipping company he works for cuts staff and lets him go. Two older colleagues, Gene McClary and Phil Woodward, face the same uncertainty, since neither of them is safe at the firm either. All three must come to terms with losing the status and income that defined them, and with what that loss means for their roles as husbands and fathers. Bobby, unable to find comparable work, ends up taking a job in construction with his brother-in-law, a change that pushes him to reconsider what matters to him.
The Company Men is a 2010 American drama written and directed by John Wells, his first feature as director; he went on to make August: Osage County and Burnt. Ben Affleck plays Bobby, with Tommy Lee Jones as Gene, Chris Cooper as Phil, and Kevin Costner as Jack Dolan. Maria Bello and Rosemarie DeWitt also star.
Made for about 15 million dollars, the film took roughly 5 million at the worldwide box office, a weak return on its budget. Audiences are moderately positive: it holds 6.7/10 on IMDb from around 51,000 votes and 6.5/10 on TMDB from a much smaller group of 828. A critics' score of 6.4/10 from 165 reviews places it close to the viewer response.
