Shock Wave

Cheung J.S. is a bomb-disposal officer with Hong Kong's police force, and a man with a history. Years earlier he worked undercover inside the circle of a explosives dealer named Peng Hong, a job that ended with the gang broken up but Hong himself escaping. Hong now returns to the city and begins planting bombs in public places, drawing Cheung into a confrontation that eventually centres on the Cross-Harbour Tunnel, where hostages are held and demands are made.

Herman Yau directed and co-wrote the film with Erica Li, and produced it with Andy Lau and Alvin Lam. It is the seventh of sixteen films Yau has directed in chronological order, arriving between Sara and The White Storm 2: Drug Lords. Andy Lau plays Cheung, with Jiang Wu as Peng Hong, and Philip Keung, Ron Ng, BabyJohn Choi and Song Jia among the supporting cast.

Made for around 23 million US dollars, the film returned roughly 78 million worldwide, a strong multiple of its budget for a Hong Kong-China action production. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 4,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from around 212 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from ten reviews places it close to those audience figures, suggesting a broadly consistent reception rather than a sharply divided one.
