Extremities

Marjorie, a young woman living in the city, is attacked on her way home by a masked man who tries to rape her. She manages to break free, but her purse is left behind, and with it the papers that tell her attacker where she lives. The police can offer her little help, so she moves in with two friends, Patricia and Terry, hoping distance will keep her safe. Her attacker, Joe, finds her anyway and confronts her in the apartment while she is alone. Marjorie turns the tables on him and takes him captive. What follows is her dilemma: whether to hand him over to authorities who may not believe her, or to take matters into her own hands, an idea she puts to her friends.

Robert M. Young directed the film, which sits between Short Eyes (1977) and Caught (1996) in his filmography. William Mastrosimone wrote the screenplay, based on his own stage play, and Burt Sugarman produced. Farrah Fawcett plays Marjorie, with James Russo as Joe, Alfre Woodard as Patricia, Diana Scarwid as Terry, and Sandy Martin and Eddie Velez in supporting roles.

Released in August 1986, the film is a two-hander drama and thriller set largely in a single apartment, where the balance of power shifts between captor and captive. It earned about 13 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 4,800 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.2 out of 10 from about 100 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 11 reviews places it below the audience scores.
