Frozen
Short description
Three friends talk a ski resort employee into one last run at the end of a Sunday on the slopes. When a shift change and a mix-up leave the lift operator believing everyone has come down, the chair stops high above the ground and the power goes off, and the resort will not open again for several days. Stranded in the cold with no one aware they are still up there, Parker, Joe and Dan must decide how far they are willing to go to get down alive.
Adam Green wrote and directed the film, which followed his 2006 debut Hatchet and came before Hatchet II the same year, Chillerama and Victor Crowley later in his filmography. Emma Bell, Shawn Ashmore and Kevin Zegers play the three leads, with supporting turns from Ed Ackerman, Rileah Vanderbilt and Kane Hodder. Peter Block and Cory Neal produced for A Bigger Boat and ArieScope Pictures, and the film runs 94 minutes.
Released in February 2010, Frozen earned roughly 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from about 87,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from around 2,000 votes, indicating a modest but lasting audience. A critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 97 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director and screenwriter Adam Green and cinematographer Will Barrett filmed the scene on the ski lift themselves, as other members of the film crew felt uneasy about the height.
- In the scene where the wolves begin to circle him just before the attack, Kevin Zegers performed the stunt himself, without a stunt double.
- The film was shot "live," meaning without a green screen, on location and without using computer special effects. The actors and actresses actually spent some time at a height of 15 meters in the seats of a ski lift on a mountainside in Utah.
- During the filming of most scenes, Adam Green refrained from using the restroom, preferring to endure as much as possible in solidarity with the actors and actresses on the ski lift, for whom taking even a minute to use the restroom was impossible.
- The film was shot in February 2009 in Snowbasin, one of the oldest ski resorts in the United States, founded in 1939.
- While some members of the film crew were scouting locations and surveying the area from the ski lift chairs, one of them spotted a location 15 meters above the surface, and as if by magic, the lift suddenly stopped right above that spot. That's how the decision was made to film right there.
- All the characters in the film were given the names of director Adam Green's friends.
