Short description
A team of researchers is working at a deep-sea station when an earthquake strikes, wrecking the facility. With their habitat no longer safe, the survivors, among them Norah Price, set out across the ocean floor in the hope of reaching another station. The journey is long, the equipment is failing, and something in the dark water is hunting them.
William Eubank directed the film, working from a screenplay by Adam Cozad and Brian Duffield. It was his second feature, following The Signal, and in his filmography it sits between that debut and Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. Kristen Stewart leads the cast as Norah, with Vincent Cassel as Captain Lucien, Mamoudou Athie, T.J. Miller, John Gallagher Jr. and Jessica Henwick as the other members of the crew. The production was mounted on a budget of fifty million dollars by Chernin Entertainment, 20th Century Fox and TSG Entertainment.
Released in January 2020, the film runs ninety-five minutes and mixes science fiction with action and horror. It earned about forty-one million dollars worldwide, less than its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from roughly 108,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 223 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director William Eubank confirmed in an interview that the giant monster at the end of the film is Cthulhu from the works of American writer H.P. Lovecraft.
- Filming took place in New Orleans.
- An error was made in the domestic localization. The complex is located at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.9 miles – the depth of the Mariana Trench), not 13 kilometers.
- For the underwater scenes, the actors wore waterproof suits, which made it difficult to hear the director's commands. Each suit weighed approximately 63 kg.
