Extraordinary Mission

Extraordinary Mission follows Lin Kai, an undercover officer who works his way into a heroin-dealing gang. His goal is to climb the criminal ranks quickly enough to earn the trust of the boss, Eagle, since only that connection can lead him to the larger figures behind the trade. The deeper he goes, the more the assignment costs him personally, and he discovers the syndicate has been holding a former policeman captive for years. Dismantling the operation and getting that man out become intertwined.

The film is a Hong Kong and mainland Chinese production directed by Alan Mak and Anthony Pun Yiu-Ming, from a screenplay by Felix Chong Man-keung, with Ronald Wong producing. For Mak it followed the Infernal Affairs trilogy, Initial D, Overheard and its sequel, and The Lost Bladesman, and it came before Under Current; for Pun it was his first directing credit, ahead of One More Chance and Cesium Fallout. Huang Xuan plays Lin Kai, with Duan Yihong as Eagle, Zu Feng as Li Jianguo, Lang Yueting as Qingshui, David Wang as Luo Dongfang and Xing Jiadong as Zhang Haitao among a credited cast of 74.

Released in March 2017 and running 117 minutes, the crime thriller drew modest audience scores, sitting at 6.2 out of 10 on IMDb from 942 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from 53 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from five reviews places professional response in roughly the same range as viewer response, with neither group embracing the film strongly.
