Short description
Andrew Wyke, a wealthy writer of detective novels, invites Milo Tindle, an out-of-work actor, to his remote English manor. Milo has been having an affair with Wyke's wife, and Wyke appears ready to let her go, but he sets a condition: Milo must stage a burglary of Wyke's jewellery so that the insurance money can support her. What begins as a proposal between two men becomes a contest of wits and deception, with each trying to outmanoeuvre the other.
Kenneth Branagh directed this film, the ninth of eighteen features he has made in chronological order, following As You Like It in 2006 and preceding Thor in 2011. Harold Pinter wrote the screenplay, and the cast pairs Michael Caine as Andrew Wyke with Jude Law as Milo Tindle; Caine and Law also served as producers alongside Branagh. The source is Joseph L. Mankiewicz's 1972 film of the same name, which starred Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine, and the 2007 version reverses that pairing's roles.
Released in October 2007, the film earned about 5 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 34,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 602 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 122 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The paintings in the home of Michael Caine’s character and the jewels in his safe are genuine. They were rented for the filming and were insured.
- Notably, Michael Caine also participated in the original version of the film. There, he played the young lover of the main character's wife. In the remake, Caine played the role of the 'cuckolded husband'.
