Country Strong
Short description
Country Strong follows Kelly Canter, a country music star whose career has faded and who has recently left rehab. Her husband and manager, James, pushes her into a comeback tour, hoping the shows will restore her standing. Along for the ride are Beau Hutton, a young singer-songwriter she becomes involved with, and Chiles Stanton, a former beauty queen trying to make it as a singer. Romantic entanglements and Kelly's personal struggles build as the tour moves between cities, threatening the plans everyone has made around her return.
Shana Feste wrote and directed the film, her second feature after The Greatest. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Kelly, with Garrett Hedlund, Tim McGraw and Leighton Meester in the other leading roles. It was produced by Meredith Zamsky, George Flynn and Tobey Maguire, among others, and carries a credited cast of 77.
Made for about 15 million dollars, the film took in roughly 21 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.3 rating from around 20,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.1 from far fewer voters. A film critics' rating of 4.7 from 133 reviews sits below both audience figures, so the film drew warmer responses from viewers than from reviewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Garrett Hedlund auditioned for the film in a regular karaoke bar, where he performed a song by the American grunge band Pearl Jam.
- Quite successful as a country singer before starting his acting career, Tim McGraw does not sing or play any musical instruments in the film. The situation is reversed for the other actors in the main roles: they play performers.
- Preparing for the role of a recovering alcoholic, Gwyneth Paltrow consulted with Robert Downey Jr., who had once suffered from alcohol addiction, and with whom she co-starred in the "Iron Man" franchise films (2008, 2010, 2013).
