Be Cool
Short description
Be Cool follows Chili Palmer, a former gangster turned Hollywood producer who grows tired of the movie business and moves into the music industry. Teaming with Edie Athens, who runs a struggling independent label, he takes on the management of Linda Moon, a young singer with talent but a difficult temperament. Getting her a hit means dealing with Russian mobsters, violent rappers, rival producers, bodyguards and persistent police detectives, all while keeping his composure.
The film is a comedy and crime story directed by F. Gary Gray, working from a screenplay by Peter Steinfeld, and produced by Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher. It was Gray's sixth feature, arriving after Friday, Set It Off, The Negotiator, The Italian Job and A Man Apart, and before Law Abiding Citizen and Straight Outta Compton. John Travolta plays Chili Palmer, with Uma Thurman as Edie Athens, Vince Vaughn as Raji, Cedric the Entertainer as Sin LaSalle, Dwayne Johnson as Elliot Wilhelm and André 3000 as Dabu.
Released on March 4, 2005, the film runs 119 minutes and was made for 53 million dollars, earning about 95 million dollars worldwide. Its ratings sit below the middle of the scale: 5.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 75,000 votes and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from around 1,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 167 reviews is in line with the audience scores, indicating a generally muted response from both groups.
What's left behind the scenes
- The scene with John Travolta and Uma Thurman at the NBA game was filmed at the Staples Center during the basketball game between the Lakers and the Sacramento Kings on February 26, 2004. Although the Lakers win in the film, they actually lost that day, with a score of 101 to 103.
- The painting is Robert Pastorelli's last work. He died from an accidental drug overdose during film production.
- Jennifer Connelly, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, and Halle Berry were considered for the role of Edi Aten.
- John Travolta himself suggested Uma Thurman for the role of Edi Aten. According to the actor, he really wanted to "revive" their iconic pairing from "Pulp Fiction".
- Brett Ratner was initially the frontrunner to direct. Ratner soon confirmed his interest in the project, but only if the film's shooting schedule didn't interfere with the production of "Rush Hour 3." Later, other information surfaced: F. Gary Gray was now the leading contender for the director's chair, and his candidacy ultimately prevailed.
- The episode featuring Aerosmith's concert and Christina Milian's character was filmed on stage at the Tweeter Center amphitheater in Mansfield, Massachusetts on June 24, 2004 – a real concert by the rock band.
- Joe Pesci was cast in the film even before shooting began. However, for unknown reasons, he left the project after filming had started.
