Short description
Two hit men, Ray and Ken, are sent to Bruges, Belgium, after a job in London goes wrong. Their boss, Harry, tells them to lie low in the city and wait for further instructions. Ken takes to the place, visiting its old buildings and treating the stay as an unexpected holiday, while Ray is restless and resentful and dislikes the town and its tourists. Among the people they meet are Chloë, a young Belgian woman, and Jimmy, a short-statured American actor shooting a European art film on location. When Harry finally makes contact, his instructions are not what Ken anticipated, and the pair's enforced break turns into something far more dangerous.
Martin McDonagh wrote and directed the film, his first as director; his later features are Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Banshees of Inisherin and Wild Horse Nine. Colin Farrell plays Ray, Brendan Gleeson plays Ken, and Ralph Fiennes plays Harry, with Clémence Poésy, Thekla Reuten and Jordan Prentice in supporting roles. Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin produced.
Made for about 15 million dollars, the film took roughly 35 million worldwide, a solid return on a modest production. On IMDb it holds 7.9 from around 491,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 from just under 6,000, showing broad approval alongside a smaller, more enthusiastic sample. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 211 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

- The word “Fuck” in various forms is uttered 137 times in the film.
- The idea for the film came to Martin McDonagh after he visited Bruges and experienced two conflicting feelings: deep delight and terrible boredom. Hence the different attitude towards the city of the two main characters.
- To create a resort atmosphere, Christmas decorations remained on some streets of Bruges until the end of March. The city council issued an official statement to the people of Bruges explaining the reason.
- In the film, Colin Farrell's character says he grew up in Dublin. In real life, Colin is actually from there.
- To obtain the weapon, Harry gives Ken the address Raamstraat 17 over the phone. In reality, the scene of the meeting with Yuri was filmed at the intersection of Spinolarei and Verversdijk streets.
- Martin McDonagh came up with the idea for the film after visiting Bruges and experiencing two contradictory feelings: deep delight and terrible boredom.
- Filming took place in Belgium from February 2nd to March 28th, 2007.
- The joke about Tottenham that appears in the film, when the characters played by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are standing in the Groninger Museum near Hieronymus Bosch's triptych "The Last Judgement," refers to the Tottenham Hotspur football club.
