In a near-future United States, the effects of global warming and a long economic decline have made parts of the country unfit to live in. The government creates a body called the Humanity Bureau to decide which citizens are still useful, and those judged expendable are sent to a colony known as New Eden. Noah Kross works as an agent for this bureau, until a case involving a single mother, Rachel Weller, and her young son, Lucas, pushes him to act against the system he serves. Nicolas Cage plays Noah, with Sarah Lind and Jakob Davies as Rachel and Lucas, and Hugh Dillon, Vicellous Shannon and Jett Klyne in supporting roles.
The film was directed by Rob W. King and written by Dave Schultz. It belongs to the early part of the director's filmography, arriving before his next feature, Distorted, in 2018. It is a science fiction thriller, just over an hour and a half long, made by Minds Eye Entertainment, VMI Worldwide and Bridgegate Pictures.
The Humanity Bureau was released in 2017. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 10 from around 13,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 4.8 out of 10 from roughly 400 votes. A critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from nine reviews places it in line with, rather than above, those audience scores. Produced for a modest 6 million dollars, it went on to take around 18 million dollars worldwide.
