Blake Morrison learns that his father Arthur is terminally ill with cancer and travels back to his hometown in Yorkshire, despite a rift between them, to spend time with him and support his mother Kim and younger sister Gillian. As Arthur's health declines, Blake revisits moments from their life together and struggles with the tension that defined their relationship. Arthur was a charismatic and domineering man whose flirtations and affairs strained his marriage, and he never fully accepted his son's success as a writer. Alongside the conflicts, Blake recalls warmer episodes, such as camping trips and drives along an empty beach, and he hopes to settle matters with his father so that his memories are not left permanently divided.
The film is based on Blake Morrison's memoir of his father and was directed by Anand Tucker, whose other credits include Shopgirl and Leap Year. Colin Firth plays Blake, with Jim Broadbent as Arthur, Juliet Stevenson as Kim and Gina McKee, Sarah Lancashire and Elaine Cassidy among the supporting cast.
Released in 2007 and running 92 minutes, it holds a critics' rating of 6.7/10 on IMDb from 102 reviews and a 6.5/10 audience score on TMDB from 72 votes, suggesting moderate approval from both quarters rather than a broad audience following.
