Short description
Fred Flarsky is an out-of-work journalist whose career has collapsed along with the newspaper he wrote for. A chance encounter reunites him with Charlotte Field, the first love of his youth, who once babysat him and has since become one of the most powerful women in the world as US Secretary of State. Charlotte is preparing to run for president, and she surprises her advisers by hiring Fred as her speechwriter. He is out of his depth among her elite team, and the two are opposites in almost every way, yet a connection forms between them as her campaign gets under way.
Jonathan Levine directed the film, his sixth feature, following Snatched. Dan Sterling and Liz Hannah wrote the screenplay, and Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen produced alongside A.J. Dix. Theron and Rogen star as Charlotte and Fred, with O'Shea Jackson Jr., June Diane Raphael, Ravi Patel and Andy Serkis in supporting roles. It was made for about 40 million USD.
Long Shot drew mixed-to-positive audience responses, with an IMDb rating of 6.8 from roughly 128,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.7 from nearly 3,000 votes. Critics were more favourable overall, giving it 7.1 from 307 reviews, so the film was received somewhat better by reviewers than by general viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- The light blue retro-style sports jacket worn by Seth Rogen's character is an accessory of a Belgian sports club from the 1980s. The jacket has the inscription “Looise A.V.” on the back, which stands for “Looise Atletiek Vereniging.” The club was once sponsored by the now-defunct Belgian bank ASLK.
- Both the film's director, Jonathan Levine, and the lead actors, Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen, said that as soon as Andy Serkis agreed to play Patrick Wembley, he himself came up with the makeup for his character (although he wasn't asked to), the application of which took several hours.
