Short description

The Souvenir: Part II continues the story of Julie, a film student who is dealing with the fallout of a turbulent relationship with an older, charismatic and manipulative man. As she works on her graduation film, she tries to make sense of her feelings for him, separating what actually happened from the elaborate fiction he constructed about himself. The film follows her as she mourns a devastating loss, attempts to put her life back in order, and comes to see things differently through the lens of her camera. It is a portrait of a young woman's artistic coming of age, blending memory and fantasy.

Joanna Hogg directed and wrote the screenplay, and produced it with Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney. It is the fifth feature she directed, following The Souvenir two years earlier, and it sits between that film and The Eternal Daughter in her filmography. Honor Swinton Byrne returns as Julie, with Tilda Swinton as Rosalind, Charlie Heaton as Jim, Jaygann Ayeh as Marland, Harris Dickinson as Pete and Richard Ayoade as Patrick. The production involved 54 credited cast and 44 credited crew members, and was made across the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States.

Released in 2021, the film runs 108 minutes. It drew strong notices from critics, whose rating stands at 8.3 out of 10 from 136 reviews. On IMDb it holds 7.1 out of 10 from around 4,800 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.4 out of 10 from about 100 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Joanna Hogg had already cast Tilda Swinton and Tom Burke in *The Souvenir* (2018), but couldn’t find an actress for the role of Julia. The problem was solved just weeks before filming began. When she met with Swinton to discuss the future role, Swinton’s daughter, Honor Swinton-Byrne, happened to be nearby, and Hogg suddenly saw Julia in her. Hogg had known Honor Swinton-Byrne for a long time, as she had been friends with Swinton, but also knew that she had never acted before, so the thought of casting her as Julia hadn’t occurred to her.
  • Joanna Hogg wrote the screenplay based on her own experience attending film school in London in the early 1980s. She and actress Tilda Swinton had been friends since childhood, and Swinton witnessed Hogg’s relationships with men during those years firsthand. Tilda Swinton, then still unknown, starred in Hogg’s graduation film, “Caprice”.
