Paul, Apostle of Christ

Paul, Apostle of Christ is a drama set in Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero, where Paul is held in prison awaiting execution. His jailer, the ambitious prefect Mauritius, struggles to understand how an old and broken man could pose a threat to the empire. Paul was once Saul of Tarsus, a zealous persecutor of Christians, and his conversion and past deeds weigh on him as he faces his final days. Risking his own safety, the physician Luke visits him, both to offer comfort and to record his words. Luke also works to preserve Paul's letters and carry them out to the growing Christian community, which endures persecution under Nero.

Andrew Hyatt directed and co-wrote the film with Terence Berden, and it was the first of three features he directed, followed by The Blind and Sight in 2023. Jim Caviezel plays Luke, with James Faulkner as Paul, Olivier Martinez as Mauritius, and Joanne Whalley and John Lynch as Priscilla and Aquila. Yorgos Karamihos appears as the younger Saul. Produced by Affirm Films, Outside Da Box, ODB Films and Mandalay Pictures, the film was made for about 5 million dollars and took in roughly 26 million worldwide, a strong return on a modest budget.

On IMDb it holds 6.7/10 from around 11,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.6/10 from about 420 votes. A critics' rating of 5.5/10 from 39 reviews places it below both audience scores.
