Bergman Island follows a filmmaking couple who spend a summer on Fårö, the Swedish island where Ingmar Bergman lived and worked, intending to write their next screenplays there. Tony, an established director, makes steady progress on his script, while Chris, considerably younger, struggles with hers and drifts further into the story she is trying to tell. As the weeks pass, the boundary between the lives they are living and the fiction they are writing becomes difficult to keep in view, set against the island's rugged landscape.
Mia Hansen-Løve wrote and directed the film, which sits between Things to Come and One Fine Morning in her filmography, following Eden. Vicky Krieps plays Chris and Tim Roth plays Tony, with Mia Wasikowska, Anders Danielsen Lie, Hampus Nordenson and Anki Larsson among the supporting cast. Charles Gillibert, Erik Hemmendorff and Rodrigo Teixeira produced the film, a co-production between Germany, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, France and Sweden.
Made for around 7 million USD, Bergman Island took about 1 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 250 votes, while the film critics' score stands at 7.5 out of 10 from 163 reviews, noticeably higher than the audience rating.
