Restless

Restless centres on Enoch, a young man withdrawn from the world since his parents died in a car crash. He spends his time attending the funerals of strangers, and his closest companion is the ghost of a Japanese kamikaze pilot from the Second World War. At one such funeral he meets Annabel, a spirited young woman who loves nature and is drawn to Charles Darwin's writings. The two recognise something kindred in each other and begin a relationship, but Annabel is terminally ill. When Enoch learns how little time she has left, he sets out to help her approach the end of her life on her own terms.

Gus Van Sant directed the film, the fourteenth of the eighteen features he has made in chronological order, arriving between Milk and Promised Land. Jason Lew wrote the screenplay, and Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Van Sant produced. Mia Wasikowska plays Annabel opposite Henry Hopper as Enoch, with Ryo Kase as the pilot Hiroshi Takahashi and supporting turns from Schuyler Fisk, Jane Adams and Lusia Strus. Made for a modest budget, the film returned considerably less at the worldwide box office.

Audience responses were middling: on IMDb it holds 6.7/10 from around 19,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5/10 from roughly 450 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1/10 from 110 reviews places it below those viewer scores.
