Three young men in 2012, led by Atsuya, commit a misdeed and hide out overnight in an abandoned general store. Late that night, a letter arrives in the shop's mailbox, written by someone seeking advice about a personal problem. The letter is dated 1980, and the friends realise the mailbox connects their present to the past. They begin writing replies, continuing a correspondence that crosses decades.
The film is directed by Ryuichi Hiroki, with a screenplay by Hiroshi Saito, and is adapted from Keigo Higashino's novel. It followed Hiroki's Strobe Edge (2015) and The Egoists (2011), and came out the same year as Policeman and Me. Ryosuke Yamada plays Atsuya, with Toshiyuki Nishida as Yuuji Namiya, the store's owner, and Machiko Ono, Nijiro Murakami, Kanichiro Sato and Kento Hayashi in supporting roles. Released in September 2017, the 129-minute drama blends family, fantasy and mystery, distributed by Shochiku with backing from companies including KADOKAWA and The Asahi Shimbun.
The film took about 14 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.7 rating from roughly 1,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from a much smaller base of around 50 votes.
