Radioactive is a biographical drama about Marie Curie, the Polish-born scientist whose work in France reshaped physics and chemistry. The film follows her partnership and marriage with Pierre Curie as they investigate radioactivity and isolate the elements polonium and radium, a breakthrough that brought international recognition but also raised questions about the effects of the energy they had named. Curie faces skepticism and hostility in a scientific world dominated by men, along with hostile press attention tied to her foreign origins, while finding support in Pierre. After a tragic accident, she must carry their research forward on her own.
The film was directed by Marjane Satrapi, her fourth feature following Persepolis, Chicken with Plums and The Voices, and precedes Dear Paris in her filmography. Jack Thorne wrote the screenplay, and the producers include Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Paul Webster. Rosamund Pike plays Marie Curie, with Sam Riley as Pierre Curie, Aneurin Barnard as Paul Langevin, Simon Russell Beale as Professor Lippmann, Katherine Parkinson as Jeanne Langevin and Sian Brooke as Bronia Sklodowska.
Released in 2020, Radioactive runs 111 minutes and was made with a budget of about 20 million dollars, against a worldwide box office of roughly 4 million dollars. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from about 24,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from around 937 votes. A critics' rating stands at 6 out of 10 from 160 reviews, close to the audience scores.
