The Debt

Three Mossad agents are sent to East Berlin in 1965 to capture a Nazi war criminal known as the Surgeon of Birkenau and bring him to Israel for trial. The operation goes wrong, and the team reports a version of events that makes them heroes at home. Thirty years later, a man surfaces claiming to be the doctor, forcing the former agents to revisit what really happened and confront the story they have lived with ever since.

John Madden directed this drama thriller, the ninth of fourteen films he has made, arriving between Killshot and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Helen Mirren plays the older Rachel Singer, with Tom Wilkinson as Stefan Gold and Ciarán Hinds as David Peretz; Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington and Marton Csokas appear as the agents in their younger years. Matthew Vaughn, Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan wrote the screenplay, and Vaughn produced with Kris Thykier and Eduardo Rossoff.

Made for about 20 million dollars, the film took roughly 46 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from around 74,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from a much smaller body of under a thousand ratings, and critics rated it 6.7 across 182 reviews. The audience scores and the critics' figure land close together, suggesting broad if unenthusiastic agreement rather than a sharp divide.
