James Miller, a British writer, travels to Italy to promote his latest book, which deals with the relationship between originals and copies in art. At a talk he meets a French gallery owner, and the two spend a day together driving into the Tuscan countryside and wandering the streets of a small village. Their conversation turns on art, authenticity and the difference between what is real and what is invented, and the line between the two grows harder to place as their encounter develops.

Abbas Kiarostami directed the film, the nineteenth of the twenty-two features listed for him, following Persian Carpet and preceding Like Someone in Love. He shares the screenplay credit with Caroline Eliacheff. Juliette Binoche plays the gallery owner and William Shimell plays James Miller; Jean-Claude Carrière and Agathe Natanson appear as a couple met in a square, with Gianna Giachetti as a cafe owner and Adrian Moore as the son. The production was an international one, mounted across Belgium, Iran, Italy and France.

Made for about seven million dollars, the film took roughly eight million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 7.8 from 135 reviews, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from 463 votes.
