Paradise Hills
Short description
Paradise Hills is a fantasy and science-fiction thriller set on an isolated tropical island at a luxurious institute of the same name. Wealthy families send their daughters there to be remade into the young women society expects them to be, and Uma wakes on the island to find herself enrolled among them. The Duchess runs the establishment, where beauty treatments, lessons and discipline are meant to correct the residents. Uma soon senses that the elegant surroundings conceal something threatening, and as she gets to know the other young women, she begins looking for a way off the island.
The film is the feature debut of Spanish director Alice Waddington, working from a screenplay by Nacho Vigalondo and Brian DeLeeuw. Emma Roberts plays Uma, with Eiza González as Amarna, Milla Jovovich as the Duchess, Danielle Macdonald as Chloe, Awkwafina as Yu and Jeremy Irvine as Markus. Made as a co-production between Spain and the United States with a budget of about 6 million dollars, it runs 95 minutes.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from more than 600 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.3 out of 10 from 70 reviews, so professional reviewers rated it somewhat higher than the wider audience did.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is full of references to the 1980s, and in particular, to cinematic classics. When the audience first sees the wards of 'Paradise Hills,' three girls dressed in white are jumping rope. This is an omen of death, similar to the films in the Freddy Krueger franchise. The architecture of the buildings is a reference to the British series 'The Prisoner' (1967-1968), and Uma's wedding dress (played by Emma Roberts) is a reference to Jim Henson's adventure film 'Labyrinth' (1986).
