Midnight Son

Midnight Son follows Jacob, a young man living in isolation because a rare skin condition keeps him out of sunlight. His routine of solitary nighttime work is disrupted when he meets Mary, a bartender, and begins to hope for a normal life. As his condition worsens, he is driven to consume human blood and struggles to control increasingly violent impulses, while local police investigating a series of killings turn their attention toward him.

The film was released in 2011 and marks the feature directing debut of Scott Leberecht, who also wrote the screenplay; his only later directing credit is the 2022 documentary Jurassic Punk. Zak Kilberg plays Jacob and Maya Parish plays Mary, with Jo D. Jonz, Larry Cedar, Arlen Escarpeta and Tracey Walter in supporting roles. It was produced by Matt Compton through Free Lunch Productions on a budget of 3 million USD, and runs 89 minutes.

Reception has been mixed. A critics' rating of 6.4/10 from 21 reviews sits above the audience scores of 5.8/10 on IMDb, from around 2,000 votes, and 5.6/10 on TMDB, from a much smaller pool of 51 votes. The gap suggests reviewers responded somewhat more positively than general viewers to this low-budget independent horror drama.
