Submarine

Submarine is a coming-of-age comedy-drama set in Swansea, Wales, centred on Oliver Tate, a precocious fifteen-year-old who believes himself far more sophisticated than those around him. He sets out to win over Jordana Bevan, a sharp-tongued classmate, while also trying to keep his parents' strained marriage from collapsing. His mother, Jill, has grown distant from his quiet father, Lloyd, and Oliver grows suspicious of Graham Purvis, a flashy new neighbour who takes an interest in her. Juggling his first relationship and his attempts to repair his family, Oliver finds both efforts harder to control than he expected.

The film was directed by Richard Ayoade, who also wrote the screenplay, and it was his first feature, followed three years later by The Double. Craig Roberts plays Oliver, with Yasmin Paige as Jordana, Sally Hawkins and Noah Taylor as his parents, and Paddy Considine as Graham. It was made for about 2 million USD.

Released in March 2011, Submarine drew a critics' rating of 7.4/10 across 154 reviews, closely matching audiences, where it holds 7.3/10 on IMDb from around 101,000 votes and 7.4/10 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of 1,641 votes. The agreement between critics and viewers suggests a film that found a consistent, modestly sized audience rather than a divisive one.
