Killer Elite
Short description
Killer Elite follows Danny Bryce, a former special operations agent who has left his violent past behind for a quiet life. That changes when his old mentor, Hunter, is taken hostage by an Arab sheikh seeking revenge for the deaths of his sons during a conflict in Oman years earlier. To secure Hunter's release, Danny must track down and eliminate retired members of Britain's elite SAS unit, making the killings look like accidents. He soon finds himself hunted in turn by a secretive group protecting the SAS men, turning the mission into a dangerous game of pursuit across several countries.
The film is directed by Gary McKendry, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ranulph Fiennes. Jason Statham leads as Danny, with Clive Owen as his principal adversary Spike, Robert De Niro as Hunter, and supporting turns from Dominic Purcell, Aden Young and Yvonne Strahovski.
Released in September 2011 and running 116 minutes, the film is an international production spanning Australia, the United Kingdom, Jordan, Morocco, the United States and France. On a budget of 66 million US dollars, it earned 58 million worldwide. Audience responses are modest and closely aligned: 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 141,000 votes, and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 124 reviews sits noticeably below those audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Sir Ranulph Fiennes (the 3rd Baronet Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes) is a British explorer, adventurer, veteran of the Special Air Service (SAS), and the author of the 1991 novel The Feather Men, which served as the literary basis for this adaptation. He has repeatedly claimed that the film is based on real events, however, the families of SAS officers who died during training exercises, and the SAS itself, have repeatedly refuted this claim.
- Filming began on May 10, 2010.
- When Danny escapes from the hospital in a car, he hits another car with the left rear headlight during a turn, causing the headlight to fall off. Literally a couple of minutes later, Danny is driving the same car, but all the headlights are in place.
