At Eternity's Gate

At Eternity's Gate follows Vincent van Gogh during the years he spent in the south of France, where he painted the landscapes and people around him in a style that would later become famous. Encouraged by Paul Gauguin to seek stronger light, he settles in Arles with support from his brother Theo, forms ties with local residents, and works constantly despite the indifference of both the public and the art establishment. The film stays close to his perspective, drawing on his letters and on real and imagined episodes from his life rather than presenting a conventional biography.

Julian Schnabel directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Claude Carrière and Louise Kugelberg. It is his fifth feature, arriving between The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and In the Hand of Dante, and it continues his interest in artists and their inner lives, which also shaped his earlier Basquiat. Willem Dafoe plays van Gogh, with Rupert Friend as Theo, Oscar Isaac as Gauguin, Mads Mikkelsen as a priest, Mathieu Amalric as Dr. Paul Gachet and Emmanuelle Seigner as Madame Ginoux.

Released in 2018, the film grossed around 11 million dollars worldwide, a modest return consistent with its specialised subject matter. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 44,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from about 1,600 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 191 reviews places it slightly above the audience score on IMDb.
