Belleville Cop

Baaba Keita is a police officer in Belleville, the Paris neighbourhood where he grew up and where his domineering mother still rules the roost. His girlfriend wants them to build a life somewhere else, but Baaba keeps putting off any transfer. That changes when Roland, a friend from childhood now working for the French consulate in Miami, is shot dead in front of him while investigating a drug trafficking case. Baaba takes Roland's post in Florida to track down the killer, bringing his mother along because he cannot leave her on her own. There he is paired with Ricardo, a local detective with a short temper, and the mismatched pair set about dismantling the network behind the murder.

Belleville Cop is a French-American crime comedy directed by Rachid Bouchareb, who wrote the screenplay with Larry Gross. Released in October 2018, it followed Days of Glory in the director's filmography and marked a shift toward mainstream comedy after his earlier dramas. Omar Sy plays Baaba, with Luis Guzmán as Ricardo, Franck Gastambide as Roland, Biyouna as Zohra and Julie Ferrier as the consul.

The film drew modest audience scores, sitting at 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 3,600 votes and 5 out of 10 on TMDB from just under 400 votes. Those figures point to a broadly lukewarm reception for a star-led genre comedy that never found much of an audience outside France.
