Short description

Zero centres on Bauaa Singh, a short-statured man from Meerut with a wealthy background, a sharp tongue and abundant confidence. His search for a partner brings him into contact with two women who could hardly be more different: Aafiya, a scientist who uses a wheelchair, and Babita, a movie star. Both relationships push him beyond the narrow world he has known and force him to consider what he actually wants from life.

Aanand L. Rai directed the film, which came after Raanjhanaa in his filmography and before Raksha Bandhan and Tere Ishk Mein. Himanshu Sharma wrote the screenplay, and Gauri Khan and Rai produced it through Colour Yellow Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment. Shah Rukh Khan plays Bauaa, with Anushka Sharma as Aafiya and Katrina Kaif as Babita. Tigmanshu Dhulia, Abhay Deol and Sheeba Chaddha are among the credited cast of 34.

Made for a reported 26 million USD, the Hindi-language comedy drama runs 164 minutes. Audience responses differ considerably across platforms: on IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from around 7,600 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.2/10 from roughly 120 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7/10 from 16 reviews places it below both audience scores. The gap between the two audience figures, and the higher number of votes behind the IMDb score, suggest a film whose reception has varied with the audience measuring it.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Initially, there were thoughts of casting Deepika Padukone in the role played by Anushka Sharma, but she turned out to be busy with other projects.
  • Anushka Sharma's appearance was kept secret. The van serving as her dressing room was parked near the set. She would enter and leave the filming area completely wrapped from head to toe. On the days she filmed, the film's creative team was prohibited from using mobile phones.
  • To reduce the height of the main character, the creators used a technology from the «The Lord of the Rings» franchise.
  • The filming of the series took place in a real trolleybus depot.
  • During the filming of many scenes, Shah Rukh Khan was forced to stand in a pit (which was later removed from the frame during post-production) so that the other actors could literally look down on him.
  • While preparing for the role of a character who is wheelchair-bound, Anushka Sharma consulted with specialists. They were consistently present on set during her filming.
  • The character played by Shah Rukh Khan was filmed using 'forced perspective' (a technique that uses illusion to make an object appear farther away, closer, larger, or smaller than it actually is). This was the first use of this technique in Bollywood.
  • Before getting behind the wheel, Fyodor Lavrov took a driving course: he learned how to operate a trolleybus, change wheels, and carbon brushes.
