Short description

Aniara is a science fiction drama set after Earth has become uninhabitable. Several spacecraft carry settlers toward Mars, among them a vast vessel built to satisfy every need of a consumer society, complete with the comforts of a shopping centre. When that ship collides with space debris and is thrown off course, the planned short journey turns into something far longer, and the passengers are forced to confront their situation and their place in the universe.

The film is directed by Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja, who also wrote the screenplay. It is the first feature directed by both, followed by Egghead Republic in 2025, and was produced by Annika Rogell. The cast includes Emelie Jonsson as Mimaroben, Arvin Kananian as Chefone, Bianca Cruzeiro as Isagel, Anneli Martini as The Astronomer, Jennie Silfverhjelm as Libidel and Peter Carlberg as Chief Engineer. It is a Danish, American and Swedish co-production, made with SVT, Vice Studios, Meta Film and Film Capital Stockholm.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 456 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 50 reviews places it noticeably higher than the audience scores. The film runs 106 minutes and was released in February 2019.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The word “Aniara” was invented by the Swedish writer and poet Harry Martinson (1904-1978). It is believed to mean the name of the space where atoms move, and Martinson came up with it while reading the works of astronomer Arthur Stanley Eddington (1882-1944).
  • The main character, played by Emely Garbers, reads the poem “Aniara” by Swedish writer Harry Martinson at a funeral, which became the literary source of the screenplay (Martinson himself is mentioned in the credits as a screenwriter).
