Black Widow
Short description
Black Widow follows Natasha Romanoff, the spy and Avenger also known as Black Widow, after she has gone into hiding for helping Steve Rogers. A dangerous conspiracy tied to her past forces her to confront the life she led as an operative long before she joined the Avengers, and the relationships that were broken along the way. Her search leads her toward Russia and to figures from her earlier years, including Yelena Belova, Melina and Alexei, while a ruthless adversary works to bring her down.
The film is directed by Cate Shortland, her fourth feature after Somersault, Lore and Berlin Syndrome, and was written by Eric Pearson and produced by Kevin Feige for Marvel Studios. Scarlett Johansson plays Natasha, with Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour in supporting roles; Ray Winstone appears as Dreykov. It was made for about 200 million USD and took roughly 380 million USD worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 474,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.1 out of 10 from more than 11,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 462 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a broadly similar, moderately positive response across viewers and critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- For the past decade, both Johansson and Marvel had expressed interest in the idea of making Black Widow films. Eventually, in 2018, Jacqueline Schaeffer was brought on as the screenwriter, and Kate Shortland was chosen as the director of the future film, although Shortland had never directed big-budget blockbusters before.
- According to the film, Alexei Shostakov (also known as Red Guardian) acts as an older comrade and mentor to Natasha Romanoff (or Black Widow). In the original comics, Alexei and Natasha were husband and wife.
- Ever Anderson was cast as young Natasha because she already knew Russian and held a green belt in taekwondo.
- The screenplay for the film was written by David Hayter, who was also supposed to direct the project in 2014, when the rights to the adaptation still belonged to Artisan Entertainment/Lions Gate.
- Scarlett Johansson tried to rehearse her lines with her husband, actor Colin Jost (a big fan of Marvel comics), but he refused, stating that he didn't want to know what would happen in the film beforehand.
- The tasers on Black Widow's wrists are yellow. This is a tribute to the original image of Natasha Romanoff – a black suit and yellow bracelets.
