A man wakes in the Arizona desert in 1873 with no memory of who he is, a metal band locked around one wrist and a wound in his side. He makes his way to the town of Absolution, where strangers are not welcome and where Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde holds the locals under his authority. The newcomer is identified as Jake Lonergan, a wanted outlaw with a price on his head, but before Dolarhyde can deal with him, craft fall from the sky and open fire on the town. To fight an enemy with far superior technology, Jake, Dolarhyde, a mysterious woman named Ella and a mixed group of townspeople, outlaws and Apache warriors have to put their quarrels aside, while Jake works out what the band on his wrist is for and what he has forgotten.

Jon Favreau directed the film, the sixth in the directing career listed for him, arriving after Iron Man 2 and before Chef. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof wrote the screenplay, with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Kurtzman producing. Daniel Craig plays Jake, Harrison Ford plays Dolarhyde, and Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, Adam Beach and Paul Dano appear among a credited cast of 46.

Released in July 2011, the film runs 119 minutes and blends western and science fiction. Made for about 163 million dollars, it returned roughly 175 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 241,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from some 5,600 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.6 out of 10 from 254 reviews, placing critics and audiences close together.
