SuperFly centers on Youngblood Priest, a cocaine dealer in Atlanta who has built a comfortable life and now wants out of the drug trade for good. Before he can walk away, he needs one more large score to fund his future, and he plans to bring his partner Eddie with him. Squeezed between his ambitions and the pressure of a police investigation, Priest finds that leaving the business behind is far harder than he expected.
The film is a remake of the 1972 crime film Superfly and was directed by Director X., following his 2016 film Center Stage: On Pointe. Alex Tse wrote the screenplay, and Joel Silver, Palak Patel and the musician Future produced. Trevor Jackson plays Priest, with Jason Mitchell as Eddie, Michael Kenneth Williams as Scatter, Lex Scott Davis as Georgia, Jennifer Morrison as Detective Mason and Kaalan Rashad Walker as Juju. It runs 107 minutes.
Made for a modest budget of 16 million dollars, the film took in about 21 million dollars worldwide, a slim return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from around 8,100 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from roughly 410 votes. Its critics' rating also stands at 5.3, based on 101 reviews, placing professional and audience opinion broadly in line.
