Short description
Vicky and Cristina, two young American friends, spend a summer in Barcelona, where they meet Juan Antonio, a painter. The two women approach love very differently: Vicky is practical and engaged to be married, while Cristina is impulsive and unsure of what she wants, only certain of what she does not. An invitation to spend a weekend away with him draws them into an unconventional relationship, complicated further by the return of Juan Antonio's ex-wife, María Elena, whose volatile bond with him has never fully ended.
Woody Allen directed and wrote the film, the thirty-sixth of the forty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, following Cassandra's Dream and preceding Whatever Works. Scarlett Johansson plays Cristina, Rebecca Hall plays Vicky, Javier Bardem plays Juan Antonio, and Penélope Cruz plays María Elena; Chris Messina appears as Doug, and Christopher Evan Welch provides the narration. The production, mounted on a budget of 20 million dollars, went on to take about 96 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 280,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from just over 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 211 reviews places it level with the IMDb figure and slightly above the TMDB one.
What's left behind the scenes
- For scenes where Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) and Maria Elena (Penélope Cruz) speak to each other in Spanish, the actors were encouraged to improvise.
- The film is based on a screenplay that Woody Allen wrote many years ago, originally set in San Francisco. Because his contract stipulated that filming had to take place in Spain, Woody Allen rewrote the old screenplay, changing the film's location and some of the characters.
- This is the fourth consecutive film by Allen shot outside the United States and the first shot in Spain.
- At the time of filming, Javier Bardem did not have a driver's license, so he had to take driving lessons. By the end of filming, the actor still had not obtained a driver's license.
