The King

The King is a historical drama set in England during the early fifteenth century, amid the Hundred Years' War. Prince Hal has turned his back on court life and lives among ordinary people, drinking and carousing with his friend and mentor John Falstaff, an ageing knight with a taste for alcohol. When his father, the despotic Henry IV, dies, Hal is crowned Henry V against his own inclinations, and the younger brother he might have relied on is lost on the battlefield. He inherits a court full of intrigue, political disorder and a war, and he must also settle accounts with his own past, including his bond with Falstaff.

David Michôd directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Joel Edgerton, following his earlier features Animal Kingdom, The Rover and War Machine. Edgerton plays Falstaff, while Timothée Chalamet takes the lead as Hal. Sean Harris appears as William, Tom Glynn-Carney as Hotspur, Lily-Rose Depp as Catherine and Thomasin McKenzie as Philippa, Queen of Denmark. Brad Pitt is among the producers.

The film runs 140 minutes and was made in Australia and the United States. It received mixed notices from critics, whose rating of 6.6/10 is well below the audience scores of 7.3/10 on IMDb and 7.2/10 on TMDB, suggesting viewers responded more warmly to it than reviewers did.
