Short description
Cal Weaver is living the American dream. He has a good job, a beautiful house, great children and a beautiful wife, named Emily. Cal's seemingly perfect life unravels, however, when he learns that Emily has been unfaithful and wants a divorce. Over 40 and suddenly single, Cal is adrift in the fickle world of dating. Enter, Jacob Palmer, a self-styled player who takes Cal under his wing and teaches him how to be a hit with the ladies.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Emma Stone is only three days older than Analise Tipton. However, her character is almost 10 years older than Jessica, Tipton's character.
  • The film was included in the list of the best films of 2011 according to the authoritative American magazine "TV Guide".
  • The cocktail that Jacob makes several times throughout the film is, according to some historians, the first American cocktail. It contains mineral water, ice, whiskey, sugar, and a large piece of orange peel.
  • Steve Carell filmed the comedy in between filming the humorous series "The Office" (2005-2013) that made him famous.
  • The stylish bar "Plas" (Plus), packed with attractive single women readily agreeing to anything, is no more than a product of the director's imagination. Such a bar never existed outside of Warner Bros. Studio's Soundstage No. 19 in Burbank (as the bar plays a significant role in the film, closing an expensive bar during filming would have been impractical). This location is already familiar to Steve Carell: Bistro Garden, where the speed dating scene for "The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)" was filmed, is located just across the street. All other locations, with the exception of Cal Weaver's apartment, actually exist.
  • The restaurant where Emily Weaver (Julianne Moore) unexpectedly informs her husband Cal Weaver in the first scene that she wants a divorce is Pinot Bistro (which closed after filming). The restaurant was located at 12969 Ventura Boulevard, at Van Noord Avenue, Studio City, in the San Fernando Valley.
  • The object of their son Robbie's affection, nanny Jessica, attends school at Ulysses S Grant High School, 13000 Oxnard Street in Valley Glen.
  • Cal and Emily Weaver live at 2002 Minoru Drive, north of New York Drive, in Altadena, north of Pasadena. The film's production designer, William Arnold, had to alter the back of the house to open up the backyard.
  • This is the second film featuring Emma Stone in which the book "The Scarlet Letter" is mentioned – in "Easy A (2010)" the book and its film adaptations are one of the central elements of the plot.
  • When Robbie deletes Jessica's number from his phone, the adjacent number – Joey K. – can be noticed. Joey King is the name of the actress who plays Robbie's sister, Molly.
  • The "Gregory Heights Middle School" where the parent-teacher conference took place, almost reuniting Cal and Emily, is actually "Taft High School," located at 5461 Winnetka Avenue, on the south side of Ventura Boulevard. It's a little east of South Valley. Taft's interiors were also used to film “Midtown Science High School” for the 2012 film *The Amazing Spider-Man* directed by Marc Webb.
