Happy Death Day 2U
Short description
College student Tree Gelbman has been living through her own murder on repeat, and after finally exposing the killer and escaping that cycle, she expects life to return to normal. Instead she wakes up in a parallel version of her world where her boyfriend Carter is dating someone else, her friends have changed in unsettling ways, and a masked figure has begun hunting her again. This time the deaths spread beyond her, reaching the people closest to her, so Tree keeps dying on purpose to protect them and to work out what keeps pulling her back into the loop.
Christopher Landon wrote and directed this sequel, his fourth feature and the follow-up to his 2017 horror comedy Happy Death Day; Jason Blum produced, and Jessica Rothe returns as Tree, alongside Israel Broussard, Charles Aitken, Ruby Modine, Suraj Sharma and Rachel Matthews. Released in February 2019, it made about 65 million dollars worldwide against a nine million dollar budget, a strong return for a modestly priced Blumhouse production.
On IMDb the film holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 95,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.3 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of about 3,700. A critics' rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 215 reviews puts professional opinion roughly level with the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- According to Jessica Roth, her favorite death scene in the film is the one where she falls out of the plane without a parachute in a bikini and falls in front of Carter and Daniel.
- It is revealed at the end that the killer is Gregory Butler. In an alternate reality, this is a reference to one of the original endings of the film, where he kills Trish along with Laurie. Furthermore, Stephanie Butler's involvement in the murder is a reference to the alternative ending of the first film, which was changed due to negative audience reactions at preview screenings.
- Trish takes a semi-automatic pistol from the police officer guarding the serial killer. Before entering the room where Laurie is to be killed, she pulls back the slide, and it doesn't return to its original position. This happens only when there are no more cartridges in the magazine.
- The sets for the scenes inside the university hospital had to be rebuilt from scratch, as the sets from the first film were not preserved.
