Francis and Marie are close friends living in Montreal. Their bond is tested when Nicolas, a young man newly arrived from the countryside, enters their circle. Both fall for him almost at once, and neither steps aside. What follows is a rivalry built as much on imagination as on reality, as each of them reads meaning into Nicolas's ambiguous behavior and spins private fantasies about where his affections lie. The tension among the three comes to a head during a stay at a vacation home.
Xavier Dolan directed, wrote and produced the film, and also plays Francis. Monia Chokri appears as Marie and Niels Schneider as Nicolas, with Anne Dorval among the supporting cast. It was Dolan's second feature, following I Killed My Mother a year earlier and preceding Laurence Anyways, and it went on to be followed by Mommy and Tom at the Farm, among others.
Heartbeats runs 97 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 out of 10 from just over a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 73 reviews places it broadly in line with how audiences have received it.
