Jojo Rabbit
Short description
Jojo Rabbit is set in Germany during the Second World War and centres on a ten-year-old boy named Jojo, who has lost his father and struggles to fit in. Ridiculed by his peers, he retreats into an imaginary friendship with Adolf Hitler, a figure who encourages the boy's blind patriotism. That world is unsettled when Jojo discovers that his mother Rosie is sheltering a young Jewish girl, Elsa, in their home. The girl challenges the beliefs he has absorbed, forcing him to weigh what he has been taught against what he sees for himself.
Taika Waititi directed, wrote and produced the film, which followed Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Thor: Ragnarok in his filmography. Roman Griffin Davis plays Jojo, with Thomasin McKenzie as Elsa, Scarlett Johansson as Rosie, Sam Rockwell as Captain Klenzendorf and Rebel Wilson as Fraulein Rahm; Waititi himself appears as the imaginary Hitler.
Made for 14 million dollars, the film took about 90 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. It is rated 7.9 out of 10 on IMDb across 485,000 votes and 8 out of 10 on TMDB from 10,700 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 431 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
