Hester Collyer is married to Sir William Collyer, a respected British judge, and enjoys a comfortable life in 1950s London. That life is upended when she begins an affair with Freddie Page, a younger former Royal Air Force pilot. The relationship consumes her, and the disapproval of her husband's circle and her family isolates her further. William will not agree to a divorce, leaving Hester caught between the security of her marriage and a passion that has taken over her life.
The film is an adaptation of Terence Rattigan's 1952 play, written and directed by Terence Davies. Davies had previously directed Distant Voices, Still Lives, and The Deep Blue Sea was the next film he directed after it in the facts' chronological list, followed later by Sunset Song and Benediction. Rachel Weisz plays Hester, with Tom Hiddleston as Freddie and Simon Russell Beale as Sir William. Sean O'Connor and Kate Ogborn produced.
Released in November 2011, the film is a British production with a worldwide box office of about 1 million USD. Critics rated it considerably higher than audiences did: it holds 7.2/10 from 142 reviews, compared with 6.2/10 from 17,000 votes on IMDb and 5.9/10 from 321 votes on TMDB.
