Eternals
Short description
Eternals follows a group of immortal extraterrestrials who have resided secretly on Earth for thousands of years. While their purpose was to protect humanity from monstrous creatures known as Deviants, they were prohibited from interfering with human development. After a long period of peace, an unexpected tragedy forces these scattered beings to emerge from hiding and reunite to fight their ancient enemies once more.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, this action and science fiction film is the second project in her career, following The Rider and preceding Nomadland and Hamnet. Produced by Marvel Studios, the movie features an ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek Pinault, Kumail Nanjiani, and Lia McHugh. The production involved a large team of 277 credited crew members and 89 credited cast members.
The film had a budget of 200 million USD and earned 402 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is mixed but generally positive, with a rating of 6.8 on TMDB based on 9,426 votes and a 6.2 rating on IMDb from 424,000 votes. These viewer scores are higher than the rating from film critics, which stands at 5.7 based on 417 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Actress Salma Hayek initially did not want to work with Marvel Studios, believing she would be given a supporting role. Salma agreed to meet and discuss filming when she learned that director Chloé Zhao was working on the film.
- Actress Lauren Ridloff had to stop running during preparation for the role and switch to building muscle, as the filmmakers wanted Maccari’s image to be more like that of a sprinter.
- In the comics, Ajax, Maccari, and Sprite are men.
- Lauren Ridloff's father trained the actors involved in the film in sign language.
- While preparing for the role of Fina, actress Angelina Jolie trained with various swords, spears, and staffs, and also practiced ballet.
- Due to Lauren Ridloff's deafness, it was difficult for her to perform in scenes where her character (Makkari) interacts with characters created using digital technology, or in action scenes. Angelina Jolie (who played Thena) helped her, using a laser pointer.
- The circular ornament on the Eternals' costumes is a reference to an astrolabe (one of the oldest astronomical instruments used to determine the latitude and longitude of celestial bodies).
- According to actor Kumail Nanjiani, director Chloé Zhao prefers practical filming to working with chroma key technology.
- According to producer Kevin Feige, Gemma Chan was cast in the film at his insistence. He himself regretted that her talent was not fully revealed in the science fiction action film 'Captain Marvel' (2019), in which Chan also starred and he served as a producer, and therefore he decided to work with her on another project.
- Actor Kumail Nanjiani wanted his performance in the film to combine the witty behavior of John McClane, the character played by Bruce Willis in the Die Hard series, and the appearance of Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan.
- Actor Ma Dong-seok eagerly took on the role of Gilgamesh, seeing an opportunity to inspire the younger generation by becoming the first Korean superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor was also able to leverage his boxing background while preparing for the role.
- In November 2019, the film's cast and crew were urgently evacuated from the Canary Islands after an unexploded German bomb was discovered near the filming location.
- To build muscle for filming, Kumail Nanjiani followed a strict diet and trained with Grant Roberts, a trainer and Mr. Canada titleholder. Nanjiani worked out five days a week for three months.
