The Outpost

The Outpost is a war film set in 2009 in northern Afghanistan, where a remote American military base, Combat Outpost Keating, sits in a valley surrounded by three mountains and close to the Pakistani border. The position is difficult to defend, and a small group of soldiers stationed there faces constant harassment from local fighters. Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha and his team arrive as reinforcements, and when word spreads that the army intends to abandon the outpost, the remaining troops prepare to hold on. Their plans are overtaken by a large, coordinated assault by Taliban fighters on 3 October 2009, leaving roughly 53 Americans to defend the camp against several hundred attackers. The film, based on Jake Tapper's book, depicts the Battle of Kamdesh, the bloodiest American engagement of the Afghan war that year, and follows Bravo Troop 3-61 CAV during the fighting.

Rod Lurie directed the film, which sits between Straw Dogs and The Senior in his filmography. The screenplay is by Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, with Les Weldon, Marc Frydman and Paul Tamasy producing. Scott Eastwood plays Clint Romesha, Caleb Landry Jones plays Ty Michael Carter, and Orlando Bloom appears as Captain Benjamin D. Keating.
